"Running with the Devil" Many of you may be familiar with the slogan, "What would you do for a (Popular Ice Cream Treat in the States)?" (Hint: It starts with a K) Would you foolishly try and outrun the Prince of Darkness? Okay, let's sweeten the pot, what if the prize was greater than something to satisfy a sweet tooth? How does one year of surprisingly good luck sound to you for achieving this feat? Is that a little better? Read on... There is a vacant church in Bucks County, sitting in a graveyard on Buckingham Mountain, called Mount Gilead Church. The Church was famous for being a sanctuary to escaped slaves who sought refuge on the Underground Railroad. There was a tale of young slave who believed that his Masters knew where he was and would be coming to retrieve him and throw him in chains, let him feel the sting of the lash, and return him to his life of servitude- or possibly worse, by removing one of his feet to prevent him from "running off" in the future. Obviously, the young man had no desire to return and face any form of punishment and made a loud proclamation to the Devil as the stroke of midnight. He said that he had no desire offer up his Soul, as it belonged to the Lord, but if he could beat the Devil in a footrace through the graveyard then that meant he would be fast enough and strong enough to evade his captors. It is said that the Devil then appeared before the young man, partly amused at his bold statement and the fact that he was so confident- he offered up nothing in return should he lose. The Devil hissed that he accepted terms of this test of speed, BUT would only grant him one year of incredibly good fortune. The man without hesitation agreed before the Devil had finished laying out the rest of his dubious contract- and concluded with IF you lose, I will kill you in the very place where you stand and you forfeit your soul to me for the same year and then I will release you to your final reward. The young man realized his error- no one makes a bargain with the Devil where the Devil doesn't get his due, and he was kind stuck between the Devil and the Deep White Man... He had foolishly agreed to the contest before the Devil even appeared, in a way, with his claim AND in his mind he could hear the blood-hounds a'barkin' as his masters drew nearer and nearer to his location. The young man considered his dilemna- was a year in Hell really worth his freedom should he lose even if the Devil allowed him to continue on to Paradise? The young man looked squarely at Ol' Scratch and said that he agreed to the terms, so long as the Devil didn't pull any of his trick'ry- that it was fair, one-on-one test of speed with a clear victor at the end. The Devil arrogantly chuckled that he agreed, because even without cheating he knew this young mortal stood no chance against him- He WAS the Devil, after all. The two contestants took there places at their makeshift starting line, when the Devil said "Go" they would begin their race. An eerie silence filled the graveyard as both parties braced themselves for the upcoming duel of speed and endurance. The Devil bellowed for the race to begin and both of them sprinted forward. The young man felt a mighty gust of wind, as the Devil sailed past him. The Devil was in the lead just as the race began- but the young man, contemplating the dire consequences of losing, struggled to catch up to the Devil. His heart pounded in his chest- as if it might explode, his muscles ached from the strain- feeling as if they could snap at any minute, and his lungs burned from inhaling the dust trail left by the Devil- who was so clearly ahead of him. The young man felt that his predicament was hopeless, but thought that the Devil may respect him for at least finishing the race. It was in that instant that he knew the Devil respected no one and that the Devil has no intention of holding up his end of the bargain, if he didn't win. His END of the bargain. His END. END. It wouldn't just be the END of their deal- IT would be the END of him. The END of his life. The END of his dream of Eternal Peace. He would spend an eternity in Hell- where the suffering was unceasing and the flames would sear his soul until the end of time. END of time. END. There it was again- losing this race would be his end. No more family. No more friends. No chance at freedom. The end of all things. No! This young man had no intention of losing everything because he blindly and stupidly entered into an agreement with the Devil before fully realizing what was at stake. No! He wasn't about lose this race. He wasn't about to lose his freedom. He wasn't about to lose his soul. The young man reached deep within himself and marshaled every ounce of his energy into his tired, stiff muscles and started rapidly closing the distance between them. The Devil, so confident that he had this one in the bag, must not have been paying attention- as he made no attempt to catch up to the young man that just flew past him with an almost supernatural burst of speed. By the time the Devil felt the gust of wind that brushed by him- the young man crossed the finish line. The Devil came in mere seconds after him, but coming in second is still losing and the Devil was not pleased. He let out a frustrated bellow that scorched the Earth around his feet- where nothing grows to this day. The Devil looked at the young man and snorted, he said, "you may have beaten me this day, but next year I will claim my prize." The young man still panting, looked up at the Devil and claimed that there would be no "next time", he wasn't about to make the same mistake twice. The Devil glared at him and sneered, "We shall see..." The young man swelling with his sense of accomplishment demanded that the devil hold up his end of their agreement. The Devil honor-bound by the terms of the contest reached down and picked up a stone from the ground and handed it to the young man. "With this simple stone, you shall know luck without equal, but in one year- to this very day, your fortunes will sour and you will be prepared to offer yourself to me," the Devil hissed. The Devil's prediction never came to pass- during that particular year, the Emancipation Proclamation passed and the man received a small parcel of land where he started and raised a family until he passed away many, many years later. It's not known whether or not the young man's luck improved, stayed the same, or worsened- his freedom seemed to be all the luck he needed to turn his life around as he never again called on the Devil for a wager to improve his situation. This story was recounted to several of our investigators by an elderly African-American woman about 8-10 years ago on the front porch of her home. She claimed to be a direct descendant of the young man in the foot race with the Devil. She also said that the story had been passed down through several generations along with something that would add some authenticity to her story. Obviously, there were quite few people that were skeptical of her claim, much less the story. To be honest, one of our investigative team wasn't buying her story at first- until she disappeared into her home and reappeared a few minutes later holding a wadded up crusty-looking piece of cloth and sat back down in her chair. She opened up the rag in her lap to reveal a dusty, old stone with a yellowed, tattered piece of parchment that described the details of her ancestors great feat. She claimed that this was the stone that the Devil presented to her ancestor after he defeated him in the race. It was a simple, unassuming stone that didn't appear to have any magical properties- it looked like an average rock that you would find in your yard... nothing special or eerie about it. Age-worn bits of the yellowed parchment, that accompanied the stone, crumbled she as she unfolded it and handed it to a member of the team. It was a hand-written account of the story that she had just finished telling our investigators, she claimed that one of her ancestors had written it down, so that they could never forget it and made sure that it was passed down to the next generation. It was crudely scrawled and faded, but it gave the details just as she has stated- several attempts were made to photograph the note, but none of them could capture the image properly. It could have been the discoloration of the parchment, the age of the faded ink used to write it, or maybe something more supernatural... The woman sat in her chair quietly rolling the stone in her hand while the pictures were being taken- then she handed it to another member of the team. The initial reaction was quite startling, the stone appeared to be almost weightless, despite it filling the palm of the investigator's hand. It felt icy cold to the touch, even though it was warm outside on her front porch- the dirty rag and the note were normal temperature. There were several readings taken with our instruments and the results were much higher than expected- the stone possessed some type of ability after all these decades. As we continued our examination of the stone, she told us that she noticed something interesting about the stone as long as she had it in her possession. It was something that was quite precious to her and that she had kept it in her jewelry box alongside her other worldly treasures. She said it seemed odd, but everytime she wore any of her jewelry that was in the box with the fabled stone- she had the most amazing luck. One day she would win a Church Potluck door prize, another day she may find $20.00 just laying on the ground, her bank would contact her letting her know that they made an error in her favor, she won a car from a local dealership in her area, and one time simply stopping to pick up a quarter stopped her from almost being hit by a bus had she just stepped off the curb. She cited several other examples where her luck just seemed to better than the average persons, but she also noticed that if she wore that particular piece of jewelry for a year- her luck seemed to worsen and her fortunes changed drastically. She discovered that if she put on another item from her jewelry box, where the stone was kept, that her luck changed for the better almost immediately. She came to the conclusion that the stone would imbue any item in her jewelry box that it came into contact with, with good fortune for exactly one year. So as long as she switched out the piece of jewelry that she was wearing before the twelfth month- she was on a virtually unending winning streak in life, BUT it only worked if it was in the proximity of the stone... another piece of jewelry charged by the stone could not empower another piece- only the stone had that ability. We thanked her for her time, the iced tea that she made, her story, her history, and her willingness to share all of it with us and were packing up and preparing to leave. She said it was nice to have someone to talk to and that genuinely believed her incredible story. She stood up and walked to the lead investigator and placed the stone in their hand, she said as she had no family or children of her own to leave it to- that she wanted us to take it and share the good luck that it had given her for all the many years that she had it. She told us that she had a good life and that she was near the end of it and was looking forward to the Eternal Peace that Heaven would provide. She also said that she didn't want to be buried with it, just in case someone wanted to take it from her grave after she was gone. She didn't have any desire to have her final resting place desecrated by someone seeking to steal the stone. She finished by saying that she did want to keep the note with her and take it with her into the next life and show to her family when she was reunited with them. We thanked her for her most generous gift and left her home. We discovered that she passed away about a month later through several local newspapers. Why does the stone still work these many years later? Did the the Devil make some type of error? Did he think that the young man would discard it after a year not realizing that it still possessed it's original abilities- thus, in essence getting the last laugh? OR did the Devil secretly grant the young man the respect that he felt he deserved for winning the race? We will never know... It's interesting to note that people to this day still venture out to this lonely cemetery to test their mettle against the Prince of Darkness by racing through the graveyard at midnight- in the hopes that they receive the same gift the young man did when he won. The say that during the race, if you feel a gust of wind after the contest then you have beaten the Devil- BUT if you feel a gust of wind any time during the race- the Devil just raced by you, and you have lost... One caveat to bear in mind before attempting this yourself- it appears that the Devil isn't a gracious with the losers as he was in the past with the young man. Many people who have reportedly taken this challenge and failed- die rather suddenly and or violently shortly after the contest. Just thought it might important for you know. We've been testing this item for a couple of years now- after rediscovering it in storage whilst digging through the archives of past investigations. Our research turned up some startling results- absolutely everything she told us was true- any item that came into contact with the stone would grant the wearer good fortune for exactly one year- after the year had passed then so had the benefits that were associated with it. She was also correct when she said that a charged piece could not and would not transfer the qualities- it either came as a result of direct transferrence from the stone or it simply did not work. We have field tested this quite extensively and also noticed that the closer we got to the the twelve month expiration that the readings from our instruments diminished as well. These are truly exciting pieces, they have been in direct contact with the stone since we rediscovered it. AT THE TIME OF PUBLISHING THIS ITEM TO THE WEBSITE, WE ONLY HAVE ONE AVAILABLE.
