DECODING THE ARS NOTORIA

DECODING THE ARS NOTORIA

The Ars Notoria makes up a portion of the magical texts of the Middle Ages quite out of proportion to the small amount of attention it has received. Among the surviving manuscripts, texts from this group recur quite frequently. An unsystematic search of modern and medieval European catalogs turns up almost fifty manuscripts which include a text of this genre dating from 1300-1600.

In British medieval library catalogs this text is mentioned almost as many times as all other texts of ritual magic put together. To this point I have found seven medieval notices of texts in this genre, which taken together with the surviving manuscripts of British origin or provenance makes a total of ten, possibly eleven, versions.

The continuing significance of the Ars Notoria through the 16th century is attested by its condemnation in the indices of Milan and Venice of 1554 as a category parallel to necromancy.

These necromantic manuals indicate the late medieval conceptions of magic included it and catalogs accurate reflections of the Ars Notoria.

The Ars Notoria poses no threat to anything other than the operator's soul. The magic itself does not appeal to the prurient interests so often motivating discussions of magic. This explains why the Ars Notoria did not find its way into literary and artistic representations of magical practice, which are taken up almost entirely with conjuring and other forms of more fearsome magic.

Representations of necromancers were more often than not a vehicle for discussing hell, the devil, demons, and the immanence of evil and divine retribution, providing a colorful context and plenty of dramatic material. The sources for the Ars Notoria begins to explain why it would not have been of much value or interest in such contexts.

The Ars Notoria ascribes its authority to Solomon, referring to the account in II Chronicles 1:9-12 and II KINGS 3:9-13 where God appears to Solomon in nocte. Among other things Solomon has asked for, he is granted sapientia intelligencia. That a wider group of people might expect these kind of gifts from God is suggested by Daniel, where God endows him and the four children with knowledge and understanding.... Luke, where Christ promises to endow his followers with wisdom.

In the Dialogus miraculorum of Caesarius of Heisterbach a priest is given the gift of preaching in his sleep. The commentary on this miracle refers back to the story of Solomon. The Ars Notoria seeks, similarly, the acquisition of knowledge or other related gifts such as rhetorical skills through the use of prayers and figures.

Although works of necromancy sometimes appear under titles usually associated with the Ars Notoria, the term was generally confined to this relatively more innocent procedure and agenda. Analyses and condemnations of this form of magic similarly restrict themselves to whether it is possible to acquire knowledge or skills through prayers, fasts and figures.

The aspects of the Ars Notoria hold glorified gifts that will ensure the interest within the follicles of the texts. The research and study of this have brought about the knowledge of the verbal formulations that were meant to be prayers. These prayers will bestow a release of power that brings about an automatic response to infuse the particles of intensity that will rapture the jurisdiction of evidence to prosper devotional occurrences of conjuring that is normally only submissible to God, angels, saints, or the blessed Virgin.
