Thousands died in Aquitaine, southwest France, after consuming rye infected with a mold, Claviceps purpurea, which contains a range of toxic ergot alkaloids.<br /><br />

This form of fungal poisoning, then noted as St. Anthony's fire and now known as ergotism, causes convulsions, diarrhea, vomiting, mania, psychosis, hallucinations and gangrene of the limbs, followed by death!<br /><br />

An occurrence of this happened in 857 and was reported that: 'a great plague of swollen blisters consumed the people by a loathsome rot, so that their limbs were loosened and fell off before death.'<br /><br />

The condition was known as St. Anthony's fire because it was believed that praying to St. Anthony would effect a cure; around 1095 the Order of St. Anthony was founded to care for those suffering from the disease.<br /><br />

It has been suggested that the symptoms of bewitchment ~ convulsions, hallucinations, crawling sensations on the skin, and so on -- were exhibited by the accused in the Salem witch trials of 1692 -- there were 3 cases where it was indicated that 3 of the killed "witches" had been suffering from ergotism.<br /><br />

We met a 10th generation witch who has diaries and a collection of empowered pieces from her mastery ancestors.<br /><br />
