Before a ritual actually begins, magicians must prepare themselves for it, both physically and mentally. Depending on which ritual is involved, this could include fasting, bathing, or prayer. Most grimores recommend thorough cleansing to improve the flow of magic.
The magician then prescribes instruments, such as chalk, a rod, a vessel (jewelry), a knife, or a wand. In most cases the instruments themselves also receive special advance preparation.
